Portland is an incredibly dog-friendly town. Chances are, if there’s a bar or restaurant with an outdoor patio, your dog is welcome to join you for some appetizers during happy hour. There are also over 10,000 acres of parks just within the city limits, and most welcome dogs. But with all the choices available, it can be hard to know the best spots to try with your canine companion. So we talked to Portland-area Muddies to find out where they’re taking their own dogs during their days off and came up with this list of thirteen options.
Tin Shed takes dog-friendly to an entirely different level with its actual dog menu. There’s plenty of great restaurants that allow your dog on the patio or near other outdoor seating, but The Tin Shed is one of the few spots that provides both human and dog-friendly food and dog-friendly indoor and outdoor seating. They have terrific house-made meat and rice dishes that dogs seem to love.
If you’re looking for a beach to enjoy with your dog, George Rogers Park is great choice. Not only is there nice beach access along the Willamette River, but there are plenty of short walking trails perfect for dogs. For longer walks, we recommend strolling along Old River Road.
This diner-style restaurant offers excellent vegan and vegetarian reinterpretations of classic foods. As you’d probably expect from any diner, their breakfast offerings are really special and range from waffles to biscuits and gravy to burritos. Once you’ve grabbed your food, you and your dog can enjoy while sitting at the dog-friendly picnic tables.
If you’re looking for a place for your dogs to run off-leash, 1000 Acres is the place! This enormous dog park has both on-leash and off-leash trails, and the park never feels crowded. The swimming hole is a great place for dogs, although it can get crowded in hot weather. There’s also access to the Sandy River, which provides a great way for your dog to cool down after a run.
Heathen Brewing Feral Public House provides dozens of beers on tap, and you’re welcome to bring your dog and sit in the large outdoor seating area. If you want to taste a certain brew, you can check their website to see what they have on tap and how much they have left. In addition to a wide selection of drinks, Heathen Brewing also offers a great selection of tacos, burgers, pizzas and other ‘pub grub.’
At nearly 30 acres, Laurelhurst Park has plenty of room to accommodate a variety of dog-related activities. There’s plenty of trails to explore with your on-leash dog, but you can also visit the off-leash dog park for a game of catch or some doggie socializing. It’s also a great park for human socializing–there’s plenty of dog owners eager to talk about their own pups–and many organizations use this park as a meeting place for breed-specific playgroups.
Dive bars and dogs don’t always mix, but at Holmans, your pup can visit if she’s willing to stay on the enclosed patio. This patio has lots of plants and a fountain to provide a bit of ambiance, which makes it more fun for you and your dog. If you manage to visit during the weekend, try the make-your-own bloody mary bar which attracts many dog owners looking for a good way to ease into the weekend.
Powell Butte Nature Park offers a gorgeous view of Mt. Hood on a clear day. With over 600 acres of park lands and 8 miles of trails, there’s plenty of room for you and your leashed dog to explore. For people who prefer to walk on hard surfaces, there are several paved paths, as well as gravel and dirt paths to enjoy.
Unlike a lot of dog-friendly breweries, Great Notion actually has a covered outdoor patio. This feature makes it a great spot for really sunny or even rainy days. They have lots of amazing and completely unique beers to try, such as the blueberry muffin sour and the cookie monster stout, but be forewarned that they only sell one type of beer per day to take home.
If you don’t have time for a long trip outside of Portland, drive to nearby West Linn and visit Mary S. Young Park. The park is over 120 acres, so it’s easy to feel like you’ve taken a trip into the country. There are miles of trails and a designated off-leash area for your dogs. For hot days, there’s also access to the Willamette River.
Right along the Columbia River, this twelve-acre park offers a long paved walking trail that connects to Marine Park. As one of the only city parks in Vancouver with water access, it’s also a great spot if your dogs want to take a swim to cool off. Wintler Park also has restrooms and benches in case you need to make a quick stop for any reason. There are also garbage cans along the trail, which is always handy!
Sauvie Island Beach is a great place for your dog to run and enjoy the water. Collins Beach, which is a nude beach, can also be a great spot for your dog to visit for some fun in the surf. There are also some trails near Collins Beach if you want to take a longer walk, as well as a boat that was marooned during a flood. It looks a bit like a UFO, so most people know it as the Sauvie Island UFO.
Located right across the street from Kenton Park, Parkside has great food and cocktails in a dog-friendly location. Unlike some of the larger breweries in Portland, Parkside a small neighborhood bar. It can get crowded on the weekends, but it’s still a great place for you and your dog to enjoy.
