Make Water Sports More Fun and Safer This Year
Healthy Dogs | June 19, 2026
You may be wondering, life jackets for dogs? Absolutely! This is a must-have safety item that should not be overlooked if youβre planning any water adventures with your dog. Similar to humans, even strong swimmers can get fatigued, experience hypothermia, or get caught in a current. Plus, a brightly colored life jacket will make your dog easier to spot in an emergency.
Some dogs should wear life jackets at all timesβeven if they are swimming from the shore. Flat-faced breeds, also known as brachycephalic breeds, are susceptible to inhaling water or having difficulty breathing when swimming. Senior dogs, dogs with short legs and long bodies, dogs with low body fat, and dogs with any type of mobility issue will also benefit from a life jacket. The right life jacket will make the water safer, and also more enjoyable for your dog.
When introducing a life jacket to your dog, preparation is key for an easy transition. Practice putting on the life jacket in different situations for short periods of time and reward your dog when they are able to accept the life jacket calmly.
A life jacket can help provide added safety and confidence for dogs enjoying time on the water, whether they’re experienced swimmers or just getting started. Choosing the right size and fit is one of the most important steps.
Before purchasing a life jacket, measure your dog’s girth around the widest part of their chest, just behind the front legs. Some life jackets use girth as the primary measurement, while others may also include neck and body length measurements.
Because sizing can vary by manufacturer, it’s always a good idea to compare your dog’s measurements to the brand’s size chart on the coat’s label.
Beyond fit, look for features that can improve safety and comfort on the water. Adjustable straps help create a secure fit, while a sturdy handle can make it easier to assist your dog in and out of the water when needed.
Bright colors can improve visibility, and durable materials can help a life jacket withstand seasons of swimming, boating, and outdoor adventures. Leash attachments also add convenience when you’re back on shore.
Once fitted, your dog’s life jacket should feel snug without restricting movement. Your dog should be able to walk, sit, and swim comfortably while wearing it. If the jacket shifts excessively, rubs, or seems uncomfortable, try adjusting the fit or exploring a different style.
Most importantly, introduce the life jacket before heading out on the water. Giving your dog time to wear it at home or during short practice sessions can help them feel more comfortable and confident when it’s time for their next adventure.
