Kaylor of Colorado

Shared Values for Cat Litter Production

When Mud Bay began looking for a partner to manufacture our corn kitty litter, we were confident that Kaylor of Colorado shared our production values. Kaylor was founded in 1976 by Mel Kaylor as a manufacturer of natural, dye-free food for birds and small animals. Today, Mel’s son Darrell continues to run the company. The company’s focus on safe and natural ingredients as well as local sourcing and low-waste production made Kaylor the best choice we could find to manufacturer our corn litter.

Muddy Tested and Approved Prior to Production

Before we began a partnership with Kaylor, we wanted to make sure we were offering the best possible corn litter option to Mud Bay customers. As part of our testing, we enlisted the help of several Mud Bay staff members who already used other brands of corn litter to put the Maize Kitty formula to the test. Muddies’ cats in both multiple and single cat households had no problem transitioning litters, and staff reported less dust and lower tracking than with other brands because Maize Kitty is triple filtered to remove dust. The odor control was also exceptional when compared to competitors.

Four Years Refining Their Corn Litter Formulation

Kaylor of Colorado demonstrated their commitment to creating the best corn litter possible when they partnered with another independent pet food retailer to create a private label litter for them. The goal was to keep the ingredient list as short as possible, only adding what was necessary to improve performance. During their years of testing, Kaylor found that adding sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) for odor control, soybean oil to control dust and improve pellet formation, and cornstarch to enhance clumping created a better product while still keeping the formula environmentally friendly and safer than other litters.

U.S. Corn Combined with Ethical Production and Ingredient Testing

Kaylor sources their corn near their production facility in Colorado and uses non-GMO corn whenever it’s available. The company also reduces waste as much possible, which aligns with their company values of sustainability. Kaylor tests all corn used in Maize Kitty for aflatoxin, a common, naturally occurring toxin found in corn. During production, the company uses a coding system to track ingredients to ensure that all of the litter they produce is safe and healthy for cats and humans.

We’re not veterinarians. Mud Bay staff are well educated, and our writing is well-researched, but neither the advice of a Mud Bay staff member nor reading Mud Bay’s written materials can substitute for visiting a veterinarian. We offer carefully chosen, natural solutions, but we believe that veterinary conditions should be diagnosed and treated by professionals.
