Spina Organics

A Shared Focus on Skin and Coat Health

Mud Bay opened our first Mud Room pet grooming salon in Olympia, WA with the very clear intention to focus on pets’ health and wellbeing above all else. This means we take a lifestyle approach to grooming, taking into consideration everything from breed to nutrition to behavior in assessing, maintaining, and improving your pet’s skin and coat health. The products we use in the Mud Room are a vital part of our approach, and when we decided to bring in our own line of grooming products we knew we needed to look for a manufacturer who shared our values. Mauro’s method of choosing ingredients based on their efficacy, safety, and natural benefits aligns seamlessly with our grooming mission.

Decades of Experience Developing and Refining Products

Mauro Spina has been a trusted name in human hair care for over 50 years. After training and opening his first salons in London in the 60s and 70s, Mauro crossed the pond to open his first salon stateside on Melrose Avenue in Beverly Hills in 1990. Here he continued to pursue his passion for holistic, natural hair and scalp care for his human clientele. And when his beloved Doberman Pinscher, Tina, developed alopecia, Mauro applied his extensive knowledge and experience to formulating gentle, natural, non-toxic and effective grooming products for dogs and cats.

Intentionally Crafted Formulas to Meet Specific Needs

When Mauro’s beloved Doberman Pinscher, Tina, developed alopecia after undergoing routine anesthesia, Mauro thought there must be a holistic alternative for treatment to the prescription medications and injections recommended by his vet. This prompted him to begin translating his knowledge and experience of human scalp and hair care to the skin and coats of pets. When designing his formulas, he chooses each ingredient very carefully to meet a specific need—like pansy extract for moisture, and moringa oil for vitamins A and E. This means each formula has a simple, transparent list of only the most necessary and useful ingredients.

Natural Ingredients Target Skin Health First

Natural, non-toxic ingredients are the core of Mauro’s approach to skin and coat care. Spina’s paraben and sulfate-free grooming products are intentionally formulated with botanical extracts to cleanse, moisturize, and soothe your pet’s skin without stripping their natural oils. By targeting your pet’s skin rather than their hair, these low-suds formulas remove dirt and excess oil and leave your pet’s coat lustrous, soft, and static and residue-free. They’re also naturally sun protective.

We’re not veterinarians. Mud Bay staff are well educated, and our writing is well-researched, but neither the advice of a Mud Bay staff member nor reading Mud Bay’s written materials can substitute for visiting a veterinarian. We offer carefully chosen, natural solutions, but we believe that veterinary conditions should be diagnosed and treated by professionals.
