A farmer in New Zealand caring for his free-range chickens

Beautiful New Zealand is an island nation with a temperate climate. This means lush, rolling hills and sunny pastures, all of which are surrounded by clean, pristine waters. A perfect place for those focused on ethically and sustainably raised and sourced ingredients to create some of the highest quality pet consumables on the planet.

When the folks behind ZIWI looked around, they noticed that many other pet food companies were blending top quality New Zealand raw ingredients with inexpensive fillers, to create highly processed diets with limited nutritional value.

As pet lovers, they thought dogs and cats deserved better—which led to a big idea:

Combining the nutritional advantages of a raw diet with the convenience of ready-to-serve dry food. And, thus, ZIWI Peak was born—bringing high protein nutrition that is free from fillers and artificial binders to every pet’s bowl.

Applying the Concept of Kaitiaki

Kaitiaki is a concept rooted in Māori culture, emphasizing their role as guardians, caring for people and protecting the land, sea, and its creatures for future generations. ZIWI took that belief to heart in seeking out partners whose animals are ethically raised, and fish are sustainably caught.

The Best Nature has to Offer, Combined with Cutting-Edge Technology

With premium natural ingredients as the starting point, it was time for ZIWI to explore ways to formulate foods that would focus delivering maximum nutrition and palatability to dogs and cats. The goal was to gently protect the nutritional benefits of raw ingredients. ZIWI strives to make foods that are biologically appropriate by mirroring an entire prey diet, which also contain functional and nutrient-rich ingredients such as tripe, New Zealand green mussels, and dried kelp.

ZIWI innovated Z-TWINTECH™ technology, in which warm air gently circulates and dries food, protecting the integrity of the natural ingredients and nutrients, as well as making it easy to scoop and serve.

Another innovation is ZIWI’s unique, two-step Z-MicroSteam™ method, which combines delicate micro-steaming with gentle air-drying. The micro-steaming is designed to create a highly palatable texture, while the air-drying locks in the natural goodness. The process creates a light texture that dogs and cats love.

Mud Bay and ZIWI—A Partnership of Shared Values

Shared values like promoting nutritious, high-meat content recipes, utilizing ethical sourcing, emphasizing sustainability and an ongoing focus on innovation made the partnership between Mud Bay and ZIWI a good match. Striving to bring high-quality, healthy consumables to pet parents and the animals they care for is a goal we both have in common.

We’re not veterinarians. Mud Bay staff are well educated, and our writing is well-researched, but neither the advice of a Mud Bay staff member nor reading Mud Bay’s written materials can substitute for visiting a veterinarian. We offer carefully chosen, natural solutions, but we believe that veterinary conditions should be diagnosed and treated by professionals.
