OUR MISSION: To contribute to the health of dogs and cats and the happiness of those who care for them as we build a family- and employee-owned company that we can be proud of.

Mud Bay’s Values

Finding the right workplace is often about finding a company that shares the same values that you do. Here are the six values we’re constantly striving to emulate (in fact, they’re so important that they are an essential part of our performance reviews).

Accountability. We follow through.
Education. We empower with knowledge.
Integrity. We do the right thing.
Generosity. We help others succeed.
Responsibility. We use our best judgment.
Fun. We create workplaces that are filled with laughter.

What Makes a Muddy?

Muddies are inspired by Mud Bay’s mission. We love animals, helping people, and being part of something bigger than ourselves.

We are curious and open-minded. We listen to learn.

We are open-hearted and generous. We own mistakes and choose vulnerability.

We are gracious, fair and inclusive. We resist discrimination, favoritism and standing in judgment.

We are action-oriented. We are energized by challenges.

We handle change and uncertainty with grace.

We speak honestly and act with integrity. We walk our talk.

We collaborate, build connections and treat others as colleagues.

What Makes the Mud Bay Experience (MBX)?

At Mud Bay, we’re always discussing the MBX we create in person and online. Here are the essential ingredients of that MBX:

Gracious. Dog and cat owners are the reason we’re here, and we’ll do anything reasonable to help them.
Healthy. Everything we carry is healthy and well-made.
Happy. Visiting our stores is a happy and educational experience.
Solutions. We give useful, accurate answers and focus on helping people choose healthy foods for their dogs and cats.
Fair prices. Our prices are among the lowest in the area.
Satisfaction. If something doesn’t work, we’ll happily take it back.
Clean. Our workspaces are well-organized, and our displays sparkle.
Carry-outs. We carry out purchases over 15lbs.
Consistently varied. The human experiences we create are unique to each moment, customer, staffer and store, but each reflects Mud Bay’s values and character.

Benefits to Working at Mud Bay

Mud Bay offers a range of benefits to help you keep a good work-life balance, stay healthy, and prepare for your retirement.

Here are some of the benefits our people love:

Employee Ownership:
Work at Mud Bay for 1,000 hours over a year, and you’ve earned a year of credited service towards participating in our employee stock ownership program. We use graded vesting to reward Muddies who stick with us long term: you’re 20-percent vested after two years and are fully vested at six years.

Earned Wage Access:
Mud Bay offers on-demand pay through our financial wellness provider UKG Wallet to help Muddies manage unexpected costs. Everyone who works here can use UKG Wallet to gain access to what they’ve already earned. This perk means that a last-minute bill can be paid before payday while avoiding late fees, overdraft fees or high-interest loans.

Employee Assistance Program:
Life has its moments and sometimes, we need help getting through them. When facing issues that interfere with your health, well-being, and productivity at work or home, Mud Bay’s EAP program provides a confidential and accessible network to put you in touch with the right kind of professional to help support you and your family.

Staff Discount:
We like our people to know everything about our products, so Mud Bay offers a 40-percent staff discount on everything we sell. It also makes it easier to provide the best possible nutrition for your own cat or dog.

Paid Time Off:
Muddies may love their jobs, but it’s important for everyone to have time away from work to recharge. That’s why we give you time off for sick days, vacation days, and those I-just-need-some-free-time days.

Health Insurance:
If you work 30 hours or more per week, you’re eligible for medical, dental and vision insurance through Mud Bay.

First Year Journey:
We train every new Muddy to understand cat and dog nutrition, physiology and health. This year-long training plan, which also covers small animals and our retail best practices, will give you all the information you need to succeed here.

Pet-Friendly Workplace:
Have a pet that’s a social butterfly? Polite dogs and cats who play well with others are happily welcomed into the store or home office while you work.

Mudstock Oregon & Washington

As preparations began for celebrating Mud Bay’s 25th anniversary in 2013, an idea started to form: What about closing EVERY store for a day, gathering ALL Muddies together and having a day-long event? One county fairground, 25 temporarily-closed stores and 250 very excited Muddies later, Mudstock was born.

The event was such a success that Mud Bay decided to hold Mudstock every year (except for the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021). The amount of stores has grown to over 60, and the number of Muddies is now more than 500, but the idea of Mudstock remains the same: a day for learning, fellowship and celebration. In 2022, for the first time, there will be two Mudstock events—one each held in Washington and Oregon—to best accommodate all Muddies where they live.

We’re not veterinarians. Mud Bay staff are well educated, and our writing is well-researched, but neither the advice of a Mud Bay staff member nor reading Mud Bay’s written materials can substitute for visiting a veterinarian. We offer carefully chosen, natural solutions, but we believe that veterinary conditions should be diagnosed and treated by professionals.
